Demi Moore Wins Pepsi Refresh Challenge
Actress raises $250,000 for Fuel partner organization Girls Educational and Mentoring Services in much-publicized online competition with actor and philanthropist Kevin Bacon.

This week, we congratulate Demi for winning the Pepsi Refresh Challenge — including a $250,000 charitable grant that will fund the work of 10 outreach workers at GEMS: Girls Educational and Mentoring Services.

Demi’s decision to focus national attention on the trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of American girls through the Refresh project came after numerous discussions with Lloyd, including an emotional visit to the GEMS offices to meet survivors and listen to their stories of recruitment, abuse, and trafficking. Demi also heard how these young women have turned their experiences into knowledge that helps other girls they meet through outreach to juvenile facilities, group homes and schools. GEMS outreach workers tell girls that they are not alone, that it is adults who buy and sell children who have committed terrible crimes, not them. They explain what ‘commercial sexual exploitation’ is and introduce GEMS as a space that will offer unconditional love and support as they heal.

Through her participation in the Refresh Challenge, Demi will help 10 survivors at GEMS become leaders and allies to their peers throughout New York City. She has introduced this award-winning organization and the needs of trafficked children to millions of people around the world, created jobs, increased hope, and changed lives. A job well done.
