United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan had a simple wish – to celebrate everyday heroes of the anti-poverty movement around the world with an awards gala that made them the stars for a night.
Fuel leaped heart-first into Mr. Annan’s dream, creating a wish list of artists who could help make the event a magical and inspiring night for its 300 VIP guests.
A night to remember, the gala event was hosted by Oscar-winner Tim Robbins, with musical performances by Grammy-winning Latin superstar Marc Anthony and breakout rocker Ben Jelen. Perhaps most moving, though, was the tribute to Shakila, an Afghani woman who, after surviving domestic violence, used her $100 microcredit loan to start a tailoring business that now employs dozens of women in Kabul. Sensing a natural synergy, fuel invited fashion mogul Jennifer Lopez to present Shakila’s award, a meeting of minds described by Ms. Lopez as “a true and great honor”.
